How Much Does Your Phone Really Cost?

eTech Parts Blog

If you own and operate a cell phone repair shop, we’re sure you’re familiar with the phrase, “You want how much to fix my phone? But I only paid $199 for it!!”

Many consumers are unaware the true value of a smartphone is more than the rate provided with a subsidized contract. What seems to be a great deal at first – $199 for a new phone on a 2-year contract – actually costs more over time and greatly skews the perceived value. This in turn cheapens the perceived value of repairs, which leads to consumers feeling less motivated to choose repair.

Lowering the perceived value of smartphones will continue to impact wireless repair shops, unless we educate consumers on the true value of their devices. OEM Parts vs aftermarket parts

I occasionally receive calls from customers that are price shopping and comparing parts quality between cellphone repair shops in the Chico area and many times I am asked if I use original Apple parts and when I say “no, I use high quality aftermarket parts”, the response I often get is, ” well this other company uses original OEM Apple parts” I won’t name which store these customers are referring to but I also see people advertising original Apple OEM parts on craigslist listings as well and I think it is time to put this nonsense to rest. When a mobile phone repair shop advertises that they use original Apple OEM parts to fix your iPhone or iPad they are flat out lying to you. Original Apple parts are not available to anyone other than Apple itself or authorized Apple repair centers. I have provided a link to their blog below.

Common misconceptions about cellphone repair

#1 “You want $250 to fix my Galaxy S5? but I only paid $100 for it!”

This is the most common misconception about the cellphone repair industry mostly due to the fact that people don’t understand the actual cost of a cellphone. For example, service providers offer a cellphone at a subsidized rate when you sign up for a two- year contract, if you look past the “discount” offered by your cellphone service provider for signing a two year contract, you may see that the full price of the device is well over $500. Most newer smartphones cost anywhere from $400 to $700 on average. Case in point, a brand new 16 b iPhone 5S will cost you $199 when you sign a two- year contract, without the contract, the retail value of an iPhone 5S is $649.00
